Introduction

Our environment is made up of living things and non-living things, they interact with themselves and experience various forms of change. In this lesson, we will be looking at changes that occur in nature, the meaning of change and the types of changes we have. We would also be looking at the differences between these types of changes and their examples.

Meaning of the concept of change

Change is said to happen when something becomes different from its normal form. Change happens when something or someone behaves differently from how they are known to behave. Changes take place in both living and non-living things.

 Activities

Think of and share with friends the various changes that have happened in your life and the society in the last couple of months.

Types of change

There are two types of change, they are:

  • Temporary change
  • Permanent change

Temporary changes are changes that do not last. They are also known as reversible change meaning that the occurrence can go back to what it used to be. Examples of a temporal change are, turning of water to ice, turning of ice to water etc

Permanent change on the other hand is a change that lasts for a long time. Once it occurs, the substance cannot return to its original state. It is also known as irreversible change. An example of an irreversible change is the felling down of a tree.

Activity

In a table, arrange the activities below under two headings: temporary and permanent change:

  • Making table from wood
  • Ice turning to water
  • Chameleon changing its colour to that of the environment
  • Making shoe from animal skin
  • The bowing away of papers by a fan.
Differences between temporary and permanent change
