Classification according to life span

Welcome to class.

How are you today?

TOPIC: CLASSIFICATION OF CROPS ACCORDING TO THEIR LIFE SPAN

In the previous lesson, we learnt about the meaning of classification and we saw that crops can be classified using different criteria and one of which is based on forms. Based on this criteria crops can be classified into monocotyledons and dicotyledons.

In today’s lesson we see another criterion for classification which is classification based on life span.

Based on this, Crops can be grouped according to their life span as follows:

Annuals,

Biennials and

Perennials.

Annual crops are crops that grow and live for about one year. Many vegetables belong to this group. Examples include tomato, amaranthus, okro, onion and carrot. Other crops in this group are yam, maize, rice, groundnut, millet, garden egg, sorghum, cassava and potato.

Biennial crops are crops that live for two years after germination and produce seeds or fruits in the second year. Examples are castor oil, pepper, alligator pepper, plantain, banana, sugarcane, pineapple and pawpaw.

Perennial crops are plants or crops that live and produce for more than two years after germination. Examples of such crops are the oil palm, cocoa, mango, citrus, guava and kola.
