TOPIC: CLASSIFICATION OF FARM ANIMALS BASED ON BREEDING

In the last lesson we saw that farm animals can be classified into different groups based on major criteria such as mode of feeding. Animals can either be ruminant or non-ruminant animals. In today’s lesson, we will focus on classifying them based on mode of breeding.

Breeding means to produce young ones. The act of producing young ones is called reproduction and it is characteristic of living things.

Classification of farm animals based on mode of breeding

Breeding means the way farm animals produce their young ones. Some animals produce their young ones alive and in their own shape and form. They provide breast milk for their young ones when they are born. Examples are the cow, sheep, goat, pig, rabbit and the horse. Most of these animals are called mammals.

Other farm animals produce their young ones by laying eggs. The eggs later hatch into young ones. Examples are poultry and fish. Other examples are Ostrich, Owl, Hawk, Falcon, Vulture, Eagle. Butterfly, Ants, Ducks, Cockroach, Bee, Grasshopper, Chameleon, Lizard, Frog, Mosquito, Snail, Shark, Cockroach, Vulture

Identify the animals in the picture below and state their mode of breeding i.e.

  1. Do they give birth to their young ones alive

  1. Do they lay eggs?
