Soil formation

Hello, welcome to class.

TOPIC: SOIL FORMATION

Meaning of Soil Formation.

Soil is the top layer of the earth. It is the part of the earth that supports plants or crops. Soil is basically formed from rocks through a process called weathering. Weathering is the breaking down of rocks by such agents as water and wind to form soil. Soils develop because of the weathering of materials on Earth’s surface, including the mechanical breakup of rocks, and the chemical weathering of minerals

ACTIVITY:

Take a sample of soil from your garden or playground; observe and mention the things you can see in it.

How soil is formed

It takes a long time for soil to form. Soil forms as rocks are broken. It mixes with other materials on the surface. Soil is constantly being formed every time a bedrock is exposed. Then overtime soil forms layers.

Water, wind and ice also helps to form soil. The key ingredient to the making of soil is the living and dead organisms found in it. These living and dead or decaying substances are called organic matter. They turn the sand and rock particles into a mixture that is perfect for plants and animals to live and grow on.

Five main interacting factors affect the formation of soil, they are:

  • parent material —They are produced from rocks
  • living organisms — such as plants, micro-organisms, insects, animals and humans.
  • Climate — temperature, etc
  • Topography — grade of slope affecting drainage, erosion and deposition
  • time—influencing soil properties.
