GEARS

A gear is a wheel fixed in machines to make different parts move at different speeds or in different directions.

Gears have toothed edges that help them to engage or mesh with one another. When two gear wheels are fitted, engaged or meshes, one wheel turns one way, while the other turns the other way, that is to say in the opposite direction.

Gears are used in motor vehicles and bicycles to ensure their smooth running under the varying speed and road conditions. The selection of low gear produces slow movement in taking off from rest and climbing a steep hill. At high gear, the car moves much faster. Two meshed gears, one is called the driving gear while the other is called the driven gear.

TYPES OF GEAR

  • Spur gears
  • Rack and pinion gears
  • Internal ring gear
  • Helical gear
  • Helical rack gear
  • Double helical gear
  • Face gear
  • Worm gear
  • Double enveloping worm gear

USES OF GEAR

  1. Gears are used to transmit power developed by the engine to the wheels.
  2. Gears are used for selecting speed in a locomotive engine.
  3. Gears are used for changing the direction of rotation in engines.

We have come to the end of this class. We do hope you enjoyed the class?
