International Sports ECOWAS Games
While we are still on the matter of sports in Nigeria and West Africa, we will be looking at an important body which regulates political activities as well as sporting activities in West Africa.
Now that you’re wondering what the acronym ECOWAS stands for, let’s learn!
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) or West African Games was an international multi-sport event between the nations of West Africa, which was held in Lagos, Nigeria in 1977.
It was opened on 27 August by Nigeria’s former head of state, Olusegun Obasanjo, ten countries took part in the eighth-day competition. A total of eleven sports were contested.
The competition was also called the ECOWAS Games on account of all participating nations being from the Economic Community of West African States, founded in Lagos two years earlier. It was organized by the ECOWAS Games Council headed by Dan Isokrari. During the games, a second edition to be held in 1979 in Cotonou, Benin was announced, though this did not come to pass
ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre (EYSDC) is the foremost regional instrument of youth and human advancement in the region.
Sports for all is an ECOWAS sporting based programme that is meant to act as a catalyst for the overall sports development of the region.
It has a mandate of training sportsmen and women, administrators, technicians and scientists, to improve interactions between sportspersons as well as giving due recognition and promotion of excellence in sports.
In summary, the International Sports (ECOWAS) Games or West African Games was an international multi-sport event between the nations of West Africa, which was held in Lagos, Nigeria in 1977.
