Introduction to Insurance

Introduction

Let’s start with something very real. Imagine you’ve just bought a brand-new laptop for school with your savings, and then—bam!—someone snatches your bag on the way home. It’s painful, right? But what if there was a way to get a new one without begging or borrowing? That’s exactly what insurance helps with. It’s something that quietly protects you from life’s unexpected troubles.

Today, you’re going to learn what insurance truly is, why it matters to people like you and me, and the different kinds of insurance that exist. Don’t worry—by the end of this class, you’ll understand insurance like a pro.

What is Insurance?

Insurance is a promise between you and an insurance company. You agree to pay a certain amount of money regularly—this is called a premium—and in return, the company promises to help you if something bad happens, like an accident, a sickness, or even a fire.

You can think of it as sharing your problems so you don’t carry all the weight alone. If ten friends all put small money together to help anyone who faces trouble, that’s the idea behind insurance.

Why is Insurance Important?

Insurance is more important than most people realise, especially in a country like Nigeria, where emergencies can easily drain your pocket. Here’s why insurance is a lifesaver:

Peace of mind: You’ll sleep better knowing you’re protected if anything goes wrong.

Financial safety: You won’t have to empty your savings or borrow money when emergencies come.

Business protection: If something affects your business—like theft or fire—insurance helps you recover.

Support for loved ones: Life insurance can provide for your family even when you’re no longer there.

Types of Insurance

There are many types of insurance, each with its own purpose:

Life Insurance – This helps your loved ones financially if you pass away. It’s especially useful if you’re supporting family members.

Health Insurance – This covers medical expenses like hospital bills, surgeries, and even prescription drugs.

Motor Insurance – This covers your car in case of accidents, theft, or damage.

Home Insurance – This protects your house and property from disasters like fire, theft, or flooding.

Travel Insurance – This helps when things go wrong during travel—lost bags, flight delays, or accidents.

Education Insurance – This is a savings plan that ensures your child or sibling can go to school, no matter what happens to you.

Example

Let’s say Chinedu owns a barbing salon in Owerri. One day, an electrical fault causes a fire, damaging most of his equipment. Because Chinedu insured the business, the insurance company pays him enough to replace his machines. Without that support, Chinedu would have had to start over from zero.

Or think about Mariam, a university student who visits the hospital often. Her parents enrolled her in a health insurance scheme. Now, she pays only a small fee to see doctors, get lab tests, and collect drugs. Her family saves money, and Mariam gets good care.

Summary

In this lesson, we’ve learned that insurance is an agreement to protect you financially from unexpected events. You pay a premium, and in return, the insurance company helps you in time of need. Insurance gives peace of mind, protects your income, and makes recovery easier after a loss. We also looked at different types—like life, health, motor, and education insurance—all useful in different ways.
