Food Processing

Welcome to class, we will be talking about food processing. I am sure that as you follow up you will enjoy the class.

Food processing is the conversion of raw food materials into new products which can either be edible or for other uses. For example, cassava can be processed into garri by frying. Cassava can also be processed into starch or into cassava flour called lafun in the western part of Nigeria. In the same way, maize can be processed into pap(ogi), corn starch or cornflour. Yam can be processed into yam flour(elubo)

ACTIVITY

Mention new products that can be obtained from the following;

  1. Plantain
  2. Beans
Red bell Pepper(tatase) being processed
Maize being processed

Importance Of Food Processing

  1. Processing enriches the usefulness of the food.
  2. It adds more value and worth to the food.
  3. It gives people the opportunity to obtain various products from the same food.
  4. It makes food storage possible
  5. It kills poisonous things in the food
  6. It makes food safe.
