THE HUMAN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

WELCOME TO CLASS

In human beings, blood is the liquid medium that carries the materials around the body. These materials include the following:

  1. Oxygen from the lungs
  2. Digested food substances such as glucose, mineral salts and amino acids.
  3. Waste products such as carbon (IV) oxide, urea, and excess salt.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE HEART

  1. The human heart is muscular
  2. It is shaped like a cone
  3. It is made up of four chambers.

The four chambers of the heart consist of two upper chambers and two lower chambers.

The upper chambers are called auricles.

The lower chambers are called ventricles.

ppp

The opening between the left auricle and the left ventricle is called the bicuspid valve while the opening between the right auricle and the right ventricle is called the tricuspid valve.

NOTE: The heart is located in the chest cavity of the body and is connected to all parts of the body by means of blood vessels.

FUNCTIONS OF THE HEART

– The major function of the heart is to pump the blood that is circulated in the body.

– The heart pumps blood so that the blood takes food, oxygen and other materials to all parts of the body, and collects waste products from all cells.

– The heart communicates with the lungs for the exchange of gases.

BLOOD VESSELS

There are three major types of blood vessels on the circulatory system. These are:

– arteries

– veins, and

– capillaries

NOTE: The capillaries allow the direct passage of solutions through their tiny permeable cells.

The veins carry blood from the body to the heart, while the arteries carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body.

GENERAL EVALUATION

  1. State the functions of the heart
  2. Identify the location of the heart.

WEEKEND ASSIGNMENT

  1. Draw and label a simple structure of the:
  2. heart
  3. arteries
  4. veins
  5. red blood cell
  6. white blood cell
  7. List the functions of the human circulatory system
