CLASSIFICATION OF FARM ANIMALS BASED ON FEEDING

Welcome back to class

Like every other living thing, farm animals feed. Eating is a characteristic of living things. Living things also breathe, excrete or remove waste products from their bodies. They also give rise to young ones. In today’s lesson, we will classify these farm animals into two based on how they feed.

Examples of farm animals are cow, goat, pig, chicken, duck etc.

ACTIVITY

  1. Mention some characteristics of animals.
  2. Give two examples of farm animals

Classification Of Farm Animals Based On Mode Of Feeding

On the basis of mode of feeding, we classify animals into three groups:

herbivores,

carnivores and

omnivores.

Herbivores: Herbivores are plant eaters. Herbivores have special teeth to help them cut and chew plants. E.g. cow, goat, and sheep

Carnivores: Carnivores are flesh eaters. Carnivores eat other animals. They hunt and eat meat. They have sharp teeth and excellent eyesight. Cats are carnivores.

Omnivores: Omnivores eat plants and other animals. Pigs, fowls are omnivores

Classification Based on Their Type of Stomach.

Farm animals can be classified into two according to their type of stomach or digestive system.

1)Ruminant animals: these are grass eaters; they have complex stomachs and chew cuds. They regurgitate what they eat.ie. they bring back what they have already swallowed for proper chewing. Their complex stomach is made up of four compartments.  examples are cow, goat and sheep.

  1. Non -ruminants: these are Non grass eaters. With simple stomachs with single compartment. e.g. swine, dogs, cats, and even horses, pig, chicken, etc.
