What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies a space. Matter can be felt or touched.

Matter can be classified into living and non-living things. Most matter in the universe is non-living. This means that it does not grow, reproduce or move itself about.

Examples of matter are plants and animals, food, water, stone, block, wood, human being, tables, pot, kerosene, sand, etc.

Living things are those things that have life. These living things in the environment are either plants or animals.

Non-living things are things that have no life in them even though they are very useful in the environment.

 

IDENTIFICATION OF LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS

  1. Colours like red, green, white, blue, etc.
  2. Sizes, e.g. There are big sizes, small sizes, medium sizes.
  3. Shapes, e.g. rectangular, triangular, etc.
  4. Taste, e.g. either sweet or bitter
  5. Smell

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS

  1. Movement
  2. Respiration
  3. Nutrition
  4. Irritability
  5. Growth and development
  6. Excretion
  7. Reproduction
  8. Organization
  9. Death

NOTE: Living things move, breathe, feed, excrete, grow, reproduce, respond to changes in the environment and die.

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF NON-LIVING THINGS

  1. Non-living things does not move about.
  2. They cannot feed.
  3. They do not take in and use air.
  4. Non-living things do not pass out waste substances.
  5. They do not grow.
  6. They do not respond to light, heat, pain and other things.
  7. Non-living things do not reproduce.
  8. They do not die.

 

GENERAL EVALUATION

  1. Identify that all living and non-living things are made up of matter.
  2. Distinguish between living and non-living things

  2. List six non-living things in your classroom
