Growing crops is also referred to as “crop farming” or “crop production”. Crop farming is the extensive cultivation and production of plants (crops) to give food, feed and fibre for the benefit of man and animals.

Compost is made up of decaying organic matter of plant and animal.

The materials for composts are vegetable wastes, grasses, weeds, dead plant leaves, ashes and water.

 

Importance of compost in crop production

  1. It improves the structure of the soil
  2. It controls erosion
  3. It adds nutrients to the soil
  4. It regulates soil temperature
  5. It improves water holding capacity in sandy soil.

 

GROWING CROPS WITH FERTILIZERS

A fertilizer is any material added to soil to support plant growth.

 

Importance of fertilizer in crop production

  1. It releases nutrients very fast for plant use
  2. It can be combined with other fertilizers
  3. It helps to regulate soil temperature
  4. It has longer effect on the soil
  5. It promotes the activities of micro-organisms.
