WELCOME TO CLASS
Sources of water include rain water, oceans, lakes, rivers, streams and underground water.
Water projects in Nigeria are initiated by the state government, federal government and some Non-governmental organizations to make water more useful, suitable and available for domestic, industrial and agricultural purposes.
EXAMPLE OF WATER PROJECTS IN NIGERIA
- CANALS: It is a narrow body of water which is controlled by human beings to connect two natural bodies of water.
Canals locations in Nigeria include:
- Lagos canals. E.g: Ajegunle, Surulere, National theatre, Alafia in Orile.
- Kano canals like Hadedia
2. DAMS: A dam is a special wall built across a river or stream.
Dams locations in Nigeria include:
- Kainji dam in Niger state
- Shiroro in Niger state
- Ero dam in Ekiti state
- Oji river dam in Enugu state
3. WATER PORTS: This is a place where ship can load and unload people and goods.
Ports locations in Nigeria include:
- Apapa/Tincan ports in Lagos state
- Port-harcourt port in Rivers state
iii. Calabar sea port in Cross-River state.
- LAKE: Lake is a body of water surrounded by land. The water is usually fresh.
Example of lake in Nigeria is the Bagauda lake located in Kano state.
BENEFITS AND HAZARD OF WATER PROJECTS
- It provides employment.
- It improves quality of life.
- It reduces water scarcity.
- It reduces erosion.
- It increases agricultural products.
- It generate electricity power.
- It is used for transportation.
