POLLUTION

Pollution is the contamination of a place or substance, thereby making it unsafe or harmful for living things, both plants and animals. It is the introduction of harmful substance into our community. These substances are called contaminants. Contaminants can cause instability, disorder and harm to the ecosystem. The ecosystem refers to the way living organism interact with their physical environment.

 

Air Pollution: It is the introduction of contaminant into the atmosphere. This is when smoke from fire and machines or exhaust fumes from cars fill the air and pollute it. Air pollution causes respiratory diseases such as asthma and lung cancer in human. Air pollution also causes blood poisoning leading to chronic cough, sneezing and allergies. It results in stunted growth in plants. Air pollution can be solid particles, liquid droplets or gases. They can also be natural or man-made.

Sources of Air Pollution

  • Burning of wood or bushes
  • Smokes from cigarette
  • Smokes from factories or industrial wastes
  • Dust
  • Smokes from mining sites
  • Smokes from vehicles
  • Smokes from burning of refuses

How Air Pollution can be Reduced

  • Avoid bush burning
  • Check road worthiness of the vehicles
  • Campaign against smoking
  • Safe keeping of harmful chemicals
  • Stop gas flaring

Effects of Air pollution

  • Air pollution causes lung diseases
  • It causes death
  • It reduces the amount of oxygen to breathe in
  • It causes suffocation
  • Irritation to the eyes, nose, throat
