Poultry Production

Welcome back to class

Poultry are domesticated birds kept by humans for their eggs, their meat or their feathers. Such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and guinea fowl.

Poultry farming means ‘raising various types of domestic birds commercially for the purpose of meat, eggs and feather production’

There are two methods of raising poultry. They are:

  • Traditional method
  • Modern method

The traditional method entails the natural method used in the olden days where the chickens are let out in the morning they walk around the vicinity of their owners house fending for themselves, feeding on whatever they find. At night they find their way back home. This is also called free range system. Their chicks go about with them until they are old enough to fend for themselves. This method is commonly used in villages.

The modern method used modern ways to feed, breed and care for the birds. Poultry farming is practised close to urban centres where a large ready market for poultry products is available. Many families in rural areas culturally keep chicken using the free range system where chicken are allowed to walk freely to find food. Other kinds of poultry kept and sold mainly to tourist hotels include turkeys, geese, ducks, guinea fowls and quails.
