SAFETY
INTRODUCTION
We shall be learning safety and certain precautions. At the end of the class, students must be able to carefully define the term safety, causes and prevention of accidents. The students will also be able to give examples of some safety measures and devices.
WHAT IS SAFETY?
Safety is when there is no possible danger or harm around us. That is Safety are rules or things we should do and put in place to avoid injury or accidents in our schools, workshops and our houses.
CAUSES OF ACCIDENT
WHAT CAN BE DEFINED AS AN ACCIDENT?
Accidents are the events that make us get injured. Accidents are caused by not obeying safety rules, precautions and regulations. Some causes of accidents are:
- Stepping on sharp objects like nails, broken bottles etc.
- Use of laboratory Machine without a teacher’s guide
- Unsafe working conditions in our environments like working without safety tools.
- Unsafe practice by workshop users
- Carelessly handling hot water
- Dropping of Banana peel on the floor that can cause you to slip and fall.
- Playing fire e.g stove, gas, and candle.
- Playing with sharp objects e.g knife, scissors.
PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS
- Wear shoes and hand gloves around workplaces
- Keep our environment clear of sharp objects
- Keep sharp tools in a safe place preferably in a closet
- Wear appropriate uniforms to protect your body at your workplace or school laboratory
- Avoid keeping sharp objects like razor blades or needles in your pocket.
- Avoid running around sharp objects
- Report and receive treatment for an injury immediately
- Be careful while playing
SOME SAFETY DEVICES
Safety devices are materials\ equipment used when working that helps to protect ourselves from accidents.
Some of the safety devices are:
- Gloves
- Caps
- Aprons
- Helmets
- Boots
- Gas masks
- Laboratory Overalls
- Eye goggles
- Fire extinguishers
- Bucket of sand.
FIRST AID BOX (ITEMS IN FIRST AID BOX)
First aid is the help given to a sick or injured person before receiving proper medical assistance.
First Aid Box is a container that contains different materials that can be used to help an accident victim before taking the person to the hospital.
NOTE: First Aid box can also be in the form of a bag. That is a First Aid Bag.
The following are items in a first aid box:
- Cotton wool
- Razor blade
- Iodine solution
- Methylated spirit
- Bandages
- Scissors
- Ointment
- Medicines like paracetamol, Panadol, balm.
