Light is very significant to mankind, the presence of light is what displaces Darkness. Light is life, light shines. Evil can only be committed in the dark and when light is absent however when the light comes darkness disappears.

In the Gospel, according to Saint John, there are three instances where Jesus Christ described himself as the light of the world. After the conversation you had with Nicodemus at night, Jesus said:

“And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”John 3:19-21

After Jesus had discharged and declared the woman caught in adultery to be guiltless. he spoke to the people saying, “I am the light of the world he will follow me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life” John 8:12.

The third time was when his disciples questioned him about a man blind from birth whom they had seen why they passed by. They enquired from Jesus whether the man’s blindness was the consequences of his sin or that of his parents. after clarifying to his disciples the cause of the man’s blindness. Jesus continued,

“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”John 9:5.

Jesus knew we would not be in the world physically for long, therefore he continued by teaching the people that he was not only the light of the world but by receiving him they also became the light of the world. In the gospel according to St. Matthew, Jesus Christ taught the people that they are the light of the world and should shine to bring glory to God.

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
