Sewing basic stitches

Definition of stitches

Stitches is the process of passing threaded needle and thread in and out of a fabric to make a special design. It means the movement of thread and needle in and out of the stitches. They are the fundamental elements of sewing, knitting, crochet, needle lace making, among others.

Types of stitches

There are two types of stitches

  • Temporary stitches
  • Permanent stitches

Basic stitches

Temporary stitches: are used to hold materials in position temporarily during work. They are removed as soon as they have served their purposes. Examples of temporary stitches are:

  1. Tailor’s tacking: These are used for transferring pattern marking to two pieces of fabrics at the same time. They are only suitable for thick strong cloth.
  2. Even tacking: This stitches and spaces between them are equal
  3. Long and short tacking
