What are values?

Values can be defined as the importance or worth which is attached to something. Values are those ideas we have as members of the society, about what is right and what is wrong or what is important in life. Values keep a society decent, progressive, safe and attractive.

Generally, the values of our society are as follows:

  • Self-reliance
  • Unity
  • Tolerance
  • Love
  • Respect
  • Peace
  • Humility
  • Happiness
  • Freedom
  • Responsibility
  • Discipline
  • Hard work
  • Respect for quality

Values Useful in House Construction

The following are the values useful in house construction in the society. They are

  • Honesty (accountability, accuracy): Builders, property developers, bricklayers, building materials’ merchants and all those involved in the construction of houses must be honest. They should use materials of high quality. All the materials should be good and durable. They should be in the right mixture or quantity. Steel rods used in construction of buildings should be of the correct grade for the particular part of the building in which it is used. The house should meet the standards the government has set.
  • Self-reliance (hard work, skill and discipline): Qualified Nigerians in the construction industry such as engineers, electricians, bricklayers, builders, surveyors, architects and plumbers should work hard and use their skills to construct good houses, so that people will not depend on foreigners to build houses for them.
  • Cooperation and unity: If workers are unable to cooperate and work together, the work will be difficult and it may even be impossible to complete the building. Also, the lack of cooperation and unity among the workers may give thieves the opportunity to steal some of the building materials.
  • Tolerance (love, respect and peace): When we love others, we would treat them the way we want them to treat us. Builders and construction workers should show respect and love for the owner of the house by being honest. Also, they should love, respect and tolerate one another so that the construction work will go on without hindrance.
  • Happiness: Construction workers should do their work with joy. Also, those in charge should keep the workers happy by paying them promptly.

 

Some Skills Involved in House Construction

The skills of the following professionals are important in house construction:

  • Architects
  • Foremen
  • Bricklayers/Masons
  • Engineers
  • Electricians
  • Joiners
  • Plumbers
  • Carpenters

Casual workers (or unskilled workers) who will help in transporting materials, mixing materials and working as directed by the foreman or site supervisor are also needed.

Dangers of Poorly Constructed Houses

A poorly constructed house is very dangerous because it may eventually collapse and destroy lives and property. We can avoid this danger by observing the following:

  • It may collapse
  • It may result in the loss of lives and properties
  • It is unsafe for people to live in.
