What is Soil?
Soil is a mixture of tiny rocks, decaying plants and animals, and other materials.1 It’s like a giant blanket that covers most of the Earth’s land.
Why is Soil Important?
Soil is incredibly important for many reasons:
- Home for Plants: Soil provides nutrients and water for plants to grow.2 It’s like a cozy home for plant roots.
- Food for Us: Plants grow in soil, and we eat those plants! So, soil helps us get the food we need to grow and stay healthy.
- Home for Tiny Creatures: Many tiny creatures, like worms and insects, live in the soil. They help break down dead plants and animals, which makes the soil rich.
- Water Storage: Soil can hold water, which is important for plants and animals. It helps prevent floods and droughts.
Imagine soil is a tasty cake. The tiny rocks are like the crunchy bits in the cake, the decaying plants and animals are like the sweet frosting, and the water is like the delicious syrup. When you mix all these ingredients together, you get a yummy cake, or in this case, healthy soil!
