Abraham Lincoln – The Man Who Ended Slavery

Have you ever seen someone stand up for what is right, even when others don’t agree with them? That was Abraham Lincoln. He became President during a difficult time in American history when the country was divided over slavery. He believed that all people should be free and treated equally, and he worked hard to make that happen.

Early Life and Education

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a small wooden cabin in Kentucky, USA. His family was poor, and he had to work on the farm from a young age. He didn’t have much formal education, but he loved to read and teach himself new things.

As he grew older, he became a lawyer and later entered politics because he wanted to make his country better. He was known for being honest, which earned him the nickname “Honest Abe.”

In 1860, Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States. At that time, America was divided over slavery—the Northern states wanted to end slavery, while the Southern states wanted to keep it. This disagreement led to the American Civil War (1861-1865), a fight between the North (Union) and the South (Confederacy).

Ending Slavery

During the war, Lincoln made a powerful decision. In 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed enslaved people in the Southern states. This was a huge step toward ending slavery in America. After the North won the war in 1865, slavery was completely abolished.

Assassination

Unfortunately, not everyone agreed with Lincoln’s ideas. On April 14, 1865, just days after the war ended, he was shot and killed by a man named John Wilkes Booth while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. Even though he died, his legacy of freedom and equality lives on.

Imagine if your school had a rule that allowed only some students to enjoy lunch, while others were forced to go hungry. Would that be fair? Lincoln believed that no one should be treated unfairly, just like he fought to end slavery and ensure everyone had equal rights.

Conclusion

Abraham Lincoln was a brave, honest, and determined leader who fought to keep his country united and end slavery. Even though he faced many challenges, he never gave up on doing what was right. His leadership changed the world and continues to inspire people today.
