Have you ever wanted something so badly that you had to speak up for it? That’s what Chief Anthony Enahoro did for Nigeria. A long time ago, Nigeria was ruled by the British, and many Nigerians wanted to be free. But who would be bold enough to ask for it? Anthony Enahoro was that brave man! Anthony Enahoro was born on July 22, 1923, in Uromi, Edo State, Nigeria. He was a very intelligent young boy who loved to read and learn. As he grew older, he became a journalist, writing about the problems Nigeria was facing under British rule.

At just 21 years old, he became the youngest newspaper editor in Nigeria! But he didn’t stop there—he wanted to see Nigeria become an independent country. In 1953, during a meeting in the Nigerian Parliament, he was the first to say, “Nigeria should be free!” He asked that Nigeria should become independent by 1956, but some people did not agree at that time.

Even though his motion for independence was not accepted immediately, he never gave up. His bold action inspired other leaders like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and Ahmadu Bello to continue fighting for Nigeria’s freedom. Finally, on October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained its independence!

Chief Enahoro continued to work for Nigeria throughout his life. He helped make important laws, fought for democracy, and became a minister in the government. He passed away on December 15, 2010, but he will always be remembered as the “Father of Nigeria’s Independence.”
