Chief Obafemi Awolowo – The Man Who Loved Education

Have you ever been given a big task and worked very hard to complete it? That’s what Obafemi Awolowo did for Nigeria. He wanted every Nigerian child to go to school and have a good life. He believed that education was the key to success and worked very hard to make it free for many children. Because of his great ideas, he is remembered as a leader, teacher, and hero.

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO

Obafemi Awolowo was born on March 6, 1909, in Ikenne, Ogun State, Nigeria. As a young boy, he loved reading and learning new things. Even though life was not easy for him, he worked hard and became a lawyer, journalist, and politician. He believed that Nigeria could become a great country if people had access to good education and good leadership.

When Nigeria was preparing for independence, Awolowo became the Premier of the Western Region in 1954. As Premier, he introduced many wonderful ideas, including:

Free primary education for children in the Western Region. This meant many children who could not afford school before were now able to go and learn!

Free healthcare for children to help them stay strong and healthy.

Building roads, industries, and radio stations to help people stay informed.

THE STORY OF CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO

Because of his love for education, many people called him “Awo”, and he was respected all over Nigeria. He was also the first Nigerian to wear a cap with a round top, which became his signature style. Even after he passed away on May 9, 1987, his work continues to inspire many leaders in Nigeria today.   

Imagine if schools in your area were too expensive and most children could not go. But then, a kind leader comes and says, “Every child deserves to go to school for free!” That is exactly what Obafemi Awolowo did for the children in the Western Region of Nigeria.
