Dr. Dora Akunyili – The Fearless Fighter for Safe Medicine
Have you ever taken medicine when you were sick and felt better? What if the medicine you took was fake and didn’t work? That would be very dangerous! A long time ago, Nigeria had a big problem with fake drugs, and many people got sick or even lost their lives. But one woman stood up and said, “No more fake drugs in Nigeria!” That woman was Dr. Dora Akunyili, and she worked hard to make sure that only safe medicine was sold in Nigeria.
Dr. Dora Nkem Akunyili was born on July 14, 1954, in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria, but she was originally from Anambra State. She was a brilliant student who worked hard and became a pharmacist, professor, and public servant. She loved helping people and wanted to make sure that every Nigerian had access to good and safe medicine.
In 2001, she was appointed as the Director-General of NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control). At that time, Nigeria had a huge problem with fake drugs. Many bad people were selling fake and harmful medicine, and this made a lot of people sick.
Dr. Akunyili decided to fight against fake drugs. She:
Closed down companies selling fake medicine.
Arrested people who were producing and selling dangerous drugs.
Educated Nigerians about how to identify good medicine.
Worked with international organisations to stop fake drugs from entering Nigeria.
Because of her hard work, Nigeria became safer, and many lives were saved. But her job was not easy—some bad people did not like what she was doing, and they even tried to harm her. But Dr. Akunyili was very brave and did not give up.
After her success at NAFDAC, she became the Minister of Information and Communication, where she started the “Good People, Great Nation” campaign to promote Nigeria’s image.
Sadly, she passed away on June 7, 2014, but she is still remembered as a hero who saved many lives.
Imagine if someone was selling spoiled food in the market, and people were eating it and getting sick. Would that be fair? No! That is exactly what fake drugs do—they make people sick instead of helping them. Dr. Dora Akunyili made sure that only good and safe medicine was sold in Nigeria.
