In Nigeria, drug control agency includes; National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

NDLEA NAFDAC

National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control  (NAFDAC)

NAFDAC was officially formed in the year 1994, as a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Health to regulate and control foods, drugs, chemicals, cosmetics, and packaged water. NAFDAC as an agency tackles and prevents public health problems that might arise from the consumption of food and other substances.

Roles and activities of NAFDAC

Some of the roles and activities of NAFDAC include:
1. They regulate and control the quality of drugs and other substances, e.g. cosmetics by conducting appropriate laboratory test on the product.
2. They exterminate expired drugs and other substances.
3. They inspect and regulate imported and exported goods such as drugs, foods, chemicals, etc.
4. They inspect and at the same time regulate production premises, raw materials used in the production of drugs and other substances.
5. They establish and maintain laboratories in strategic areas of the country
6. They register and issue a license to tested and trusted products.
7. They liaise with the relevant establishments within or outside the country.
8. They create awareness programs on the storage, distribution and ration use of drugs, foods, cosmetics, packaged water, etc.

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)

NDLEA is a federal agency in Nigeria that was established by the promulgation of Decree Number 48 of 1989 to exterminate illegal drug trafficking, production, consumption, buying or selling in the Nigerian society.
The NDLEA is always present in international airports, seaports, border crossing, inside the country to put a stop to the importation or exportation of hard drugs.

Roles and activities of NDLEA

Some of the roles and activities of NDLEA include:
1. They control and regulate the free flow of hard drugs in the country.
2. They enforce laws against illegal drug trafficking, consumption, production, buying or selling of hard drugs in the Nigerian society.
3. They arrest drug abusers and hand over them to the police.
4. They recover all ill-gotten wealth acquired from proceeds of illegal drug transactions.
5. They strictly monitor and put a stop to the importation or exportation of hard drugs.
6. They protect and maintain the image of Nigeria and Nigerians anywhere in the world.

Misuse of herbal medicine

Herbal medicines are plant extracts or mixture used to maintain, cure or prevent diseases. Examples of herbal medicine include the bark of a tree, vegetative parts of plants, plants roots, etc. Herbal medicine has been in existence throughout history and they are used to treat, cure or prevent several kinds of ailments. Misuse of herbal medicine is simply because it is unquantifiable. That is, herbal medicines have no dose.
