Imagine you and your friends want to choose a class captain. Some people support one friend, while others support another. To make it fair, you decide to vote for the best person. This is similar to what happens in politics! Long ago, before Nigeria became independent, there were no political parties like we have today. But some smart and brave Nigerians decided it was time to form groups that could fight for the rights of Nigerians and help them have a say in how the country was run. That was how Nigeria’s first political party was born!
The first political party in Nigeria was the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP). It was formed in 1923 by Herbert Macaulay, who is often called the “Father of Nigerian Nationalism” because he fought for Nigeria’s freedom from colonial rule. The NNDP was created to give Nigerians a voice in government. At that time, Nigeria was still under British colonial rule, and the people didn’t have much say in how they were governed. The NNDP helped Nigerians participate in elections and fight for their rights.
The first political election in Nigeria happened in 1923, the same year the NNDP was formed. This election was for the Legislative Council, which was like a small government group that helped make laws. However, not everyone was allowed to vote—only a few Nigerians, mostly the rich ones living in Lagos and Calabar, could vote. Even though it wasn’t a full democracy like we have today, it was still an important step towards independence. The NNDP won most of the seats in this election, making it the most powerful political party at that time.
As time went on, more political parties were formed, and more Nigerians were allowed to vote. This led to bigger elections and, eventually, Nigeria’s independence in 1960. Today, we have many political parties in Nigeria, and every citizen above 18 years old has the right to vote in elections.
Think about a football match where two teams are competing. Each team wants to win, so they gather supporters, wear their jerseys, and campaign to convince people they are the best. This is how political parties work! They tell people what they plan to do and ask for votes. Just like in football, the team (or party) with the most votes wins!
