Have you ever been sick and had someone take care of you? Imagine being in a hospital where there are no nurses, the rooms are dirty, and there is no proper medicine. Shining a light on 'The Lady with the Lamp' - Magazine

Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy, to a wealthy British family. Even though most rich women at that time were expected to get married and stay at home, Florence wanted to help sick people. She decided to become a nurse, even though her parents didn’t like the idea.

During the Crimean War (1853-1856), British soldiers were getting sick and dying in dirty hospitals. Florence and her team of nurses went to help. She:

Cleaned the hospitals and made sure everything was neat and safe.

Taught nurses how to care for patients properly.

Introduced handwashing and hygiene to stop the spread of diseases.

She became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” because she walked through the hospital at night with a lamp, checking on the soldiers and making sure they were comfortable.
