What is value?

Value is the standard principles, ideas, belief, that are supported, maintained and accepted by individual and society they live in. It can also be defined as the esteem quality or importance which a person or group of persons attach to certain belief, idea or principle. Value sometimes can be seen as your worth.

Types of value

We have two types of value:

  1. Positive value
  2. Negative value.
Positive value:

A positive value has to do with other qualities that are good to oneself and society as a whole. These are instances of how positive value can be placed;

  • A young woman can place value on her virginity regardless of the situation she finds herself, that no sex till marriage.
  • A young woman can place value on her education and will do everything for her to succeed in her educational success.

Examples of positive value are the following; honesty, integrity, discipline, tolerance, forgiveness, patience, self-belief, kindness, selflessness, justice, goodness, respect, equity, self-control, etc.

Negative value:

A negative value is bad, worthless, and not good because it will bring nothing but one’s downfall and destruction. Any negative value will destroy his or her life at the end of it all. These are instances of how negative value can be placed;

  • A young person can place value on taking hard drugs and this will affect the person
  • A young woman can place value on insulting both young and old ones.

Examples of negative value are the following; envy, pride, wickedness, sloth, anger, lust, self-disbelief, dishonesty, discrimination, frustration, malice, lies, stealing, trouble-making, fighting, gluttony, unfair-criticism, etc.

Importance of value

Values are important to society in the following ways:

  1. Basic human values also promote positive or good relationship among people when they all accept such societal norms, attitudes or ways of doing things.
