European Explorers
The major explorers of the 19th century are
- Mungo Park (1795 – 1807)
- Hugh Clapperton (1821 – 1827)
- The Lander Brothers (1830)
- Dr. Heinrich Barth and
- Dr Baikier.
The motives for the activities of the explorers
- The explorers wanted to discover the interior of Nigeria e.g. rivers, mountains, towns etc.
- Some explorers embarked on trading expedition e.g. Dr Baikier.
- The explorers were motivated by the individual revolution in Britain to search for overseas markets for the sale of extra production, as well as raw materials for their industry.
- Steamships for exploration were produced through the industrial revolution and this made explorer’s task easy.
- Effective suppression of the slave trade from the interior.
The impact of the explorations
- It increased the commercial activities of the Europeans in Nigeria.
- It led to complete stoppage of the slave trade in Nigeria.
- It led to the spread of Christianity into the interior of Nigeria.
- It prepared the way for British occupation and colonisation of Nigeria.

- Give reasons for the explorers’ activities in the 19th century.
