A skill set is a category of knowledge, abilities, and experience necessary to perform a job. In many aspects of life, a skilled person always produces a better and quality output than the unskilled. Therefore, the level of skill an individual attains mostly determines the extent of his or her pay in an organization.

Skill is the ability to do something well especially when you have learned or practised it. Therefore, skill acquisition means the systemic process used in acquiring new knowledge to carry out a difficult or more complex job. In other words, skill acquisition is a specific form of learning. Skill acquisition requires a lot of effort, discipline, practice, drill and reviews.

Reasons for skill acquisition

Some of the reasons for skill acquisition are:

Taking risk: During the skill acquisition process, risks are taken to achieve a particular goal.
Decision-making: Acquiring a particular skill requires a decision. The decision whether to go to school or drop out, whether to enrol for a particular job or stay back. Decision-making counts a lot.
Managing emergency: People use skill acquisition to manage an emergency, to prevent a worse situation from happening.
Survival strategy: Many people acquire skills to improve their survival instinct either consciously or unconsciously, e.g. going to the hospital when sick, wearing of clothes to protect the body from cold, building and living in houses, cooking, preserving food, etc.
Learning to live together: Naturally, human beings live in communities and share common characteristics. This is necessary because people in the same community should understand and respect each need, share the same law and regulations, etc.
For employment purpose.

Types of skills

The following are different types of ski acquired in society: photography farming, basic computer literacy, artistry, fashion designing, graphic designing, horticulture, bricklaying, carpentry, catering, etc.

Farming skills: Farming is the process of working the ground, planting seeds, and growing edible plants, raising animals for milk or meat is referred to as farming. Farming serves as a source of income for many people. It provides employment opportunities and provides foods to society.
Basic computer literacy: In this modern age, everybody needs to acquire basic computer knowledge. Due to technological advances, computers are used in learning, entertainments, offices, banks, schools, etc. Computer knowledge has made learning easy, makes a difficult task easy to tackle, provides job for people and also serves as a source of income for many people.

Photography: Photography is a technique used in capturing an event or a scene on a picture. The captured image or picture can be printed or projected on a screen. A lot of people acquire photography skill to keep a record of events, e.g weddings, birthday parties, class lectures, etc.
Bead making: Beads are used traditionally for decorations. Many people acquire skills in bead making to make a profit, look good and be creative. Bead making is very simple and easy to learn Bead making has made several people self-employed and serves as a source of income to many.

Fashion designing: Fashion designing deals with the design of clothes and other clothing accessories, it can be influenced or affected by people’s tradition or culture, social attitude and it has varied over time. Fashion designing has helped a lot of people to be self-employed and beautify people.
Graphic designing: A skilled graphic designer is a professional that deals with graphic design and graphic art. He/she assemble images, different artworks to make a design. Graphic designing has improved life quality and provide jobs for many people.
