Hands-on test, short presentations, and feedback

Hello my sharp Afrilearn learner! You’ve come so far, and I’m really proud of the work you’ve put in. Today’s session is a little different—but definitely exciting! We’re focusing on something that helps you test what you’ve learnt, express yourself clearly, and grow even better: hands-on tests, short presentations, and feedback. Let’s get into it together!

Hands-on test, short presentations, and feedback

Imagine reading about how to ride a bicycle without ever trying one. Sounds odd, right? That’s why in science—and especially in plant physiology and biotechnology—it’s important to combine theory with practice. Hands-on tests and short presentations help you apply everything you’ve learnt, share your ideas confidently, and receive constructive feedback that helps you improve.

So in this session, it’s all about you taking the lead, showing what you know, and learning from the experience.

Hands-on Tests

Hands-on tests are practical activities that allow you to apply your knowledge to real or simulated lab tasks. You may not be in a physical lab, but you can still do virtual or at-home versions of experiments, like:

  • Measuring transpiration rate using a homemade potometer made from a plastic bottle and tubing.
  • Extracting chlorophyll from spinach or ugu leaves and observing colour changes in light and darkness.
  • Testing the effects of plant hormones by growing beans with and without plant growth regulators like gibberellic acid (if accessible).
  • Preparing a growth medium using gelatine and nutrients to observe seed germination.

These activities help you see plant physiology in action and make your learning real.

Short Presentations

Now it’s your time to shine! Presentations give you the chance to explain what you’ve learnt in your own words. This builds your communication skills, boosts your confidence, and prepares you for real-world applications in research, teaching, or community projects.

You could prepare a short 3–5 minute virtual presentation on topics like:

  • “How water moves in plants: from roots to leaves”
  • “The role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis”
  • “Why genetic diversity in crops matters in Nigeria”

Use simple language, tell stories, and connect your presentation to everyday Nigerian life—mention crops we eat like yam, cassava, maize, and how your topic applies to them.

Feedback

Feedback is one of your most powerful tools for growth. Whether you’re getting feedback from a teacher, a peer, or through self-reflection, it helps you spot areas to improve and build on your strengths.

Here’s how you can give and receive feedback effectively:

  • Be specific: Instead of saying “it was good,” say “I liked how you explained the role of stomata with a clear example.”
  • Be positive: Start with what went well before suggesting improvements.
  • Be open: Don’t take feedback personally. It’s meant to help you grow, not pull you down.

Also, take time to reflect: What did you enjoy? What was challenging? What would you do differently next time?

Summary

  • Hands-on tests help you practise what you’ve learnt and connect theory to real-world plant processes.
  • Short presentations build your confidence, help you communicate science clearly, and allow you to show your understanding.
  • Feedback—whether given or received—helps you improve and become a better learner and future scientist.

Evaluation

  1. Suggest one hands-on experiment you can try at home using household items.
  2. Prepare an outline for a short presentation on any plant physiology topic of your choice.
  3. List two ways feedback can help you become a better science communicator.

Your curiosity, effort, and energy are what make learning powerful. Remember, this is not just about passing exams—it’s about becoming the kind of scientist, educator, or innovator who can make real impact in Nigeria and beyond. Keep giving it your best, and never stop asking questions. I believe in you—always! Let’s keep going, lesson by lesson, towards greatness!
