Welcome to class!
In today’s class, we will be talking about the Christian attitude to work. Enjoy the class!
Christian Attitude to Work
Attitude can be defined as a way of feeling or acting toward a person, thing or situation.
God has set the example of hard work for us. He worked for 6 days before taking a rest on the 7th day. After creation, he comes to the work to Adam to tend the garden. What is an essential part of a man’s life? God does not support any form of indolence. Man is made to work. (Gen 2:15; 3:17-19)
God detests any form of laziness. the book of Proverbs contains a lot of instruction on how to be diligent and not to be lazy.
When Jesus Christ was on that he had this to say about work.
“I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh when no man can work.”
John 9:4. This reflects a great understanding of Jesus’ attitude to work.
The Bible says a lot about how Christians are to conduct themselves on their job. This involves either as an employee or an employer. It is essential for the Christian to learn how the Lord would have you work, and fulfil your responsibilities there.
Apostle Paul’s Admonition on Christian attitude to work
Apostle Paul, a diligent apostle of the lord gave his recommendation in Romans 12:11 “not slothful in business haven’t in spirit serving the Lord.” Further, Paul gave this important instruction to the church in Thessalonica on the need for them to work and encourage diligence.
“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye, brethren, be not weary in well-doing.” 2 Thessalonians 3:10-13
Christians attitude at the workplace
At work, all Christians are Servants of the Lord. We are to serve the Lord throughout our entire day at home, and at work. You must understand that a Job is What God Gives you so that you could serve. Without your job, you will be very limited in serving God in the other ministries. We must be discerning not to let Satan trick us into laziness, and defeat.
As a Christian, you should view your job as a ministry opportunity, not just a job. You are an ambassador for Jesus Christ in the marketplace. Therefore, your life should reflect and demonstrate the Bible. You should serve in your job as if God was your employer (Eph 6:5-8; Col 3:22-24). Have a grateful attitude at work! Don’t join people who could influence you wrongly.
As a Christian, you are to do the very best that you can to help the company succeed and make your employer look good (Rom 12:11; 1 Cor 10:24; Prov 10:4).
Christians should take note of James 5:1-5 teaching against defrauding their employees or taking unfair advantage of them.
