Factors that Led to the Rise of Songhai Empire

Decline of the Mali Empire
First, the decline of the Mali Empire created a power vacuum in the region. As Mali’s influence waned, other groups began to compete for control. This created an opportunity for the Songhai people, who were initially under Mali’s control, to assert their independence and expand their territory. This further enhanced Songhai’s wealth and prestige. It’s like capturing the most important city in a neighboring region.
The Embrace of Islam
The embrace of Islam by the ruling class also played a role. While traditional beliefs remained important, Islam became a powerful force within the empire, particularly among merchants and the educated elite. This facilitated trade relations with Muslim merchants from North Africa and the Middle East, further boosting Songhai’s economy and its connections to the wider Islamic world.
