My Afrilearn padi, how body na?
Hope say you dey kampe today? Because today we go talk about something wey concern everybody for this world, whether you dey Lagos, London or Lafia. The topic be Global Warming and Greenhouse Gases. No fear the big grammar—by the time we finish, you go sabi am like how you sabi your best food.
Global warming and greenhouse gases
Wetin Be Global Warming?
Global warming na the slow increase in the average temperature of the Earth. In simple terms, the world dey heat up like pot of jollof rice for fire. This no be natural heating o; na human beings cause am mostly—through things wey we dey do every day like burning fuel, cutting trees, and using certain chemicals.
Example wey you go relate with:
Have you noticed say harmattan no dey come like before? Or sometimes rain go just fall anyhow when e no suppose? Na global warming dey cause that kind wahala.
Wetin Dey Cause Global Warming? – Greenhouse Gases
Imagine say Earth wear one big blanket wey trap heat. That blanket na what we call greenhouse gases. Dem allow sunlight enter but no let all the heat escape back to space, so the Earth dey warm up.
Major Greenhouse Gases:
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂): From cars, factories, generators, and burning firewood.
- Methane (CH₄): From cow belching, rice farms, and waste dumpsites.
- Nitrous oxide (N₂O): From fertilisers and waste.
- Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): From old fridges, sprays and ACs (but banned in many places now).
How These Gases Enter the Air:
- When we burn fuel (petrol, diesel, kerosene) for transport or cooking
- When farmers use too much chemical fertiliser
- When we cut trees and no plant new ones (deforestation)
- When waste dey pile up without proper disposal
Effects of Global Warming We Don Already Dey See:
- Hotter weather: Like when you feel say sun dey vex.
- Rising sea levels: Lagos and coastal areas dey at risk of flooding.
- Changing rain pattern: Farmers no fit predict rainy season again.
- Animals and plants dying off: Their habitat don change, dem no fit survive.
So Wetin We Fit Do?
- Plant more trees (trees dey absorb CO₂)
- Use cleaner energy like solar
- Reduce waste, recycle, and reuse
- Avoid bush burning
- Support policies and leaders wey care about the environment
Real-Life Nigerian Angle:
For places like Makoko and other coastal communities, rising sea levels dey threaten their homes. Flooding for Lagos and Bayelsa no just happen by chance—global warming dey play big role. Na why say environmental action no just be oyinbo talk—it affect all of us.
Summary:
- Global warming na the rise in Earth’s temperature, mainly caused by greenhouse gases.
- Greenhouse gases like CO₂, methane, and CFCs trap heat like blanket.
- Human activities like burning fuel, cutting trees, and bad waste disposal increase these gases.
- Effects include extreme weather, flooding, and loss of species.
- We fit help by planting trees, reducing waste, and using clean energy.
Evaluation:
- Name two greenhouse gases and where dem come from.
- How global warming dey affect farming in Nigeria?
- Mention two things we fit do to reduce global warming.
Oshey genius! My Afrilearn superstar, you too much!
This your brain dey shine pass NEPA bulb for December! You don take serious step to protect your environment and understand the world better. Keep this same fire burning—you dey destined for greatness! On to the next lesson we go!
