Welcome to class!
In today’s class, we will be talking about love. Enjoy the class!
Love: God’s Love for Man and Man’s Love for One Another
Jesus as the living bread (John 6:25-14)
Jesus was very discerning when the people came to him for food pretending they came to hear the word of God. They came because they knew Jesus had just felt a multitude recently at the other side of the sea. Firstly, Jesus rebuked them that they were only looking for him to be fed and because of the signs they had seen. He encouraged them to rather seek the word of Life which leads to eternal life. The people asked him what they would do as proof that they were doing the work of God. Jesus told them to believe in him who was sent by God.
They requested a sign to make them believe that truly He was sent by God, they told Jesus that their forefathers ate the manna in the wilderness which was sent down from heaven. Jesus informed them that manna was sent as a temporary relief from physical hunger God has sent down a living bread (Jesus) which gives life to the world.
Lessons to be learnt from Jesus as the bread of life
- We should seek Jesus for substance and not for me earthly things as such, Christians should not base their belief only on signs and wonders.
- Physical weakness does not affect spiritual strength. Therefore we should set our priority on the things of the spirit and not food that perishes.
- Man should not live by bread alone but by the word of God.
- Christians should depend on Jesus as the only source of life.
Jesus as the living water (John 4:7-15)
Jesus went to Galilee, he had to go through the country of Samaria. Jacob’s well was there. At this time, Jesus was tired from his long trip, so he sat down beside the well. It was about noon. Then, a Samaritan woman came to the well to get some water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” This happened while his followers were in town buying some food. The woman refused because Jews and Samaritans have no dealings.
Jesus answered and said unto her, “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.” John 4:10
The woman said, “Sir, where will you get that living water? The well is very deep, and you have nothing to get water with. Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob? He is the one who gave us this well. He drank from it himself, and his sons and all his animals drank from it too.”John 4:11-12
The woman asked Jesus to give her this water so she can never be thirsty again and won’t have to come back here to get more water.
Jesus told her to go get her husband and come back.
The woman answered, “But I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right to say you have no husband. Then Jesus gave her a brief narrative of her life. Hearing this, the woman acknowledged Jesus as a prophet. She invited others to come to see Jesus, the promised messiah.
