Meaning of Literature in English
Literature refers to the body of written works, both fiction and non-fiction, that express the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of individuals and societies. It encompasses various forms, such as novels, poems, plays, and short stories, which are considered to be of lasting artistic and intellectual value.
Literature serves several purposes:
1. Reflection of society: Literature reflects the values, beliefs, and customs of a society, providing insights into its culture and history.
2. Entertainment: Literature entertains, educates, and enlightens readers, offering a unique perspective on life.
3. Personal growth: Literature helps individuals develop empathy, critical thinking, and communication skills.
4. Preservation of heritage: Literature preserves the heritage of a society, passing down traditions and values to future generations.
5. Social Commentary and Change: Literature serves as a platform for social commentary, critiquing societal norms, and advocating for change.
Through literature, authors can raise awareness about social issues, challenge injustices, and inspire readers to take action. By exploring complex social issues, literature can promote empathy, understanding, and positive change.
Examples
Let’s consider two examples of literary works:
1. The Lion and the Jewel by Wole Soyinka: This play is a classic example of African literature, exploring themes of cultural identity, tradition, and modernity. It reflects the societal values and customs of the Yoruba people of Nigeria.
2. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost: This poem is a celebrated example of American literature, exploring themes of choice, regret, and self-discovery. It invites readers to reflect on the consequences of their decisions and the importance of individuality.

– Non-fiction: Literature that is factual or based on real events, such as biographies and essays.
