Queen Moremi

Have you ever had to make a difficult choice to help your family or friends? Imagine a time when a kingdom was under attack, and only one person had the wisdom and courage to stop the enemies. A long time ago, in the ancient Yoruba kingdom of Ile-Ife, the people were constantly attacked by enemies called the Igbo warriors (not the Igbo people of today, but a different group of invaders). These enemies were very tricky because they covered themselves in grass and leaves, making them look like spirits. The people of Ile-Ife were afraid because they thought the attackers were magical beings.

Queen Moremi, the wife of King Oranmiyan, could not stand to see her people suffer. She came up with a brave and clever plan. She pretended to be captured by the Igbo warriors so she could go into their camp and learn their secrets. The enemies did not know who she was, so they made her their queen. While she was there, she carefully observed them and discovered that they were not spirits—they were just ordinary men who used grass and leaves to scare people.

After learning their secret, Moremi escaped and returned to Ile-Ife. She told her people the truth, and together, they planned how to defeat the attackers. The next time the Igbo warriors came, the people of Ile-Ife used fire to burn their grass costumes, and they won the battle. Thanks to Queen Moremi’s bravery, Ile-Ife was saved!

Moremi made a great sacrifice for her people. Before she went on her mission, she promised to offer something to the gods of the river if she succeeded. After she returned, she kept her promise by giving up her only son, which was a very painful sacrifice. Her people were so grateful that they honoured her forever. Even today, the Moremi Statue of Liberty stands in Ile-Ife to remember her courage.
