In our previous lesson, we learned about the basic tools and equipment used for pattern drafting. Today, we’re going to go deeper into the essential skill of taking accurate body measurements. Accurate measurements are crucial for creating well-fitting garments and ensuring a comfortable and flattering fit.

Basic Body Measurements

  • Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape measure level.
  • Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, which is usually about an inch above your belly button.
  • Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips, keeping the tape measure level.
  • Shoulder Width: Measure from one shoulder point to the other, across the back.
  • Arm Length: Measure from your shoulder point to your wrist, with your arm extended straight down.
  • Sleeve Length: Measure from your shoulder point to your wrist, with your elbow slightly bent.
  • Height: Measure your height from the top of your head to your feet.
  • Inseam: Measure from the crotch to your ankle, along the inside of your leg.

Additional Measurements

  • Bust Rise: Measure from the shoulder point to the fullest part of your bust.
  • Back Length: Measure from the nape of your neck to your waistline, along your spine.
  • Armhole Depth: Measure from the shoulder point to the armpit.
  • Neck Circumference: Measure around your neck, just below your Adam’s apple.
  • Wrist Circumference: Measure around your wrist.
  • Bicep Circumference: Measure around your bicep at its widest point.
  • Thigh Circumference: Measure around your thigh at its widest point.

Tips for Taking Accurate Measurements

  • Use a Flexible Tape Measure: Ensure that the tape measure is flexible and doesn’t stretch or sag.
  • Stand Straight: Stand tall and relaxed while taking measurements.
  • Keep the Tape Measure Level: Make sure the tape measure is level and not twisted or kinked.
  • Take Multiple Measurements: Take multiple measurements to ensure accuracy.
  • Consider Ease: Add a few inches to your measurements for ease of movement and comfort.
