Physical fitness is considered as a measure of the body’s ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisurely activities, to be healthy, to resist diseases, and to meet emergencies. Fitness or being fit describes a person’s ability to perform a specific function or cope with various situations. Physical fitness involves moderation to rigorous physical activities along with a balanced diet.

Benefits derived from physical fitness

Fitness is defined as the quality of being suitable to perform a particular task. Physical fitness is a general state of health and wellbeing and, more specifically, the ability to perform aspects of sports or occupations. Physical fitness is generally achieved through physical activity and exercise, correct nutrition, enough rest, and stress management and relaxation. The benefits of physical fitness are numerous, some of which include the following

  1. Reduced risk of diseases: Regular exercises and correct nutrition decreases the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, Metabolic syndrome, cancer, etc.
  2. Development of physical fitness components: Physical fitness components such as muscle strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, agility, speed, bone density, and improvement of muscle tone are developed through regular exercises.
  3. Stronger muscles and bones: This is developed through correct nutrition and regular exercises. It is evident in all physically fit individuals.
  4. Maintenance of optimal body weight: Physical activity increases the muscle mass, reduces fat and thus controls weight. Correct nutrition and physical fitness can control body weight and prevent obesity and other weight-related problems.
  5. Boost in energy level: A regular exercise program, especially in the Mornings, will give you energy and drive for the rest of the day. This effect is related to the increased metabolism associated with a fitter body.
  6. Improved sleeping habits: Exercise improves the blood flow in the body and promotes better sleep.
  7. Relaxation Regular physical activity, fitness workouts releases the hormones, which have “feel-good factor”, and helps in reducing your stress levels thus giving you more strength to fight life’s challenges.
  8. Boost your confidence: Physical fitness provides correct posture, figure, body image, and good appearance along with increased energy levels. It gives you a sense of accomplishment, which is a boost to confidence.

Factors that influence physical fitness

There are a couple of factors that influence physical fitness, and at different stages in the life of a person. These factors tend to appear at different proportions. Below is a description of some factors.

  1. Heredity: A person with a high likelihood of diseases and illnesses is hardly ever fit. For example, parents with sickle cell anaemia will pass it on to their children who thence become incapable of rigorous physical activities required to improve health.
  2. Physical activity: This is one big factor that influences physical fitness. Regular physical activities in the form of exercises help improve the overall condition of the body.
  3. Age: A young person is often fitter than an old person. This is as a result of degeneration in the muscle and other internal organs in the body of a person as he ages.
  4. Nutrition: Correct nutrition is required to maintain and develop physical fitness. Taking the right dietary combination of food and drink help improve the overall health and fitness of a person.
  5. Stress management/relaxation: This reduces the rate of mental and emotional fatigue, which is known degrade the overall fitness of a person.
  6. Environment: A clean environment improves the health of a person, thus providing enough mental and physical energy for exercises.
