Combined event are competitions in which athletes participate in several track and field events, earning points for their performance in each event, which adds to a total point score. Common combined events are decathlon, heptathlon, and pentathlon.

Combined event are competitions in which athletes participate in several track and field events, earning the point for their performers in each event, which adds to a total point score. Combined events are classified into:

  • Pentathlon
  • Decathlon
Pentathlon:

This is an athletic event comprising five different events for each competitor. The name is derived from greek Penta- ” five” and Athlon- “contest”. Pentathlon comprises the following events:

  1. Long jump
  2. Javelin
  3. 200- meter
  4. Discus throw
  5. 1500- meter run.

A pentathlon is typically a one-day event, and it is performed in the order it is listed above.

Decathlon:

This is an athletic event comprising ten different events for each competitor. The name is derived from greek Deka- “ten” and Athlon “contest”. In particular, decathlon comprising the following event:

  1. 100-meter dash
  2. Long jump
  3. Shot put
  4. High jump
  5. 400- meter dash
  6. 110- meter hurdles
  7. Discus throw
  8. Pole vault
  9. Javelin
  10. 1500- meter run

The decathlon is held over two days, which is performed in the following order.

First day

  • 100 meters
  • Long jump
  • Shot put
  • High jump
  • 400-meter

Second day

  • 110-meter hurdles
  • Discus throw
  • Pole vault
  • Javelin throw
  • 1500 meter

Scoring the event

To rank athletes in the order of their performance in each event, and thereby obtain a winner correspondingly and without any misjudgment, there is a need to put in place generally acceptable mode of scoring. The combined event is scored using a scoring system that is based on different parameters that characterize group event, and distance for a field event.

Using the scoring system, the performance of each athlete is recorded and converted to points. There is a mathematical formula for calculating the point of each event using the parameters described above.

  • For a track event, the point is calculated as;

Points= (A(B-B)C) (FASTER TIME PRODUCES A BETTER SCORE)

  • For a field event, the point is calculated as:

Point = (A(P-B)C) (GREATER DISTANCE OR HEIGHT PRODUCES BETTER SCORE)

Where A, B and C are parameters that vary by discipline, while P is the performance by the athlete, measured in second (running), meters (throwing), or centimetres (jumping). The table below shows the value of these parameters in different events.

Table: the value of the scoring parameter in combined events.

Event A B C
100m 25.4347 18 1.81
Long jump 0.14354 220 1.4
Shot put 51.39 1.5 1.05
High jump 0.8465 75 1.42
400m 1.53775 82 1.81
110m hurdles 5.74352 28.5 1.92
Discus throw 12.91 4 1.1
Pole vault 0.2797 100 1.35
Javelin throw 10.14 7 1.08
1500m 0.03768 480 1.85

The same value holds for the event of pentathlon and decathlon. It is often the case that athletes manage themselves during the game by choosing, which event to put more effort and those of which they reserve energy.

To do this successfully the athletes need to understand the benchmark-scoring table to accurately affix what point they want to earn in each event during the game. The table below shows the benchmark level needed to earn 1000, 900, 800 and 700 points in each event.

Table: Benchmark

Event 1000 pts 900 pts 800 pts 700 pts Units
100m 10.395 10.827 11.278 11.756 Seconds
Long jump 7.76 7.36 6.941 6.51 Meters
Shot put 18.4 16.79 15.16 13.53 Meters
High jump 2.20 2.10 1.99 1.88 Meters
400m 46.17 48.19 50.32 52.58 Seconds
110 hurdles 13.8 14.59 15.419 16.29 Seconds
Discus throw 56.17 51.4 46.59 41.72 Meters
Pole vault 5.28 4.96 4.63 4.29 Meters
Javelin throw 77.19 70.67 64.09 57.45 Meters
1500m 3:53.79 4:07.42 4:21.77 4:36.9 Minutes;

Seconds

The same benchmark will apply to the pentathlon with five events and decathlon with 10 events.
