Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. It is about doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. For a nation to thrive, its citizens must uphold integrity in all aspects of life.

What is Integrity?

– Integrity is the adherence to moral and ethical principles.

– It means being consistent in actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations, and outcomes.

– It is often described as doing the right thing even when it is not acknowledged by others, or even when it is not in your own best interest.

Why is Integrity Important?

– Builds Trust: When people act with integrity, others know they can trust them.

– Promotes Fairness: Integrity leads to fairness. It means treating everyone equally and making decisions based on unbiased reasoning.

– Creates a Positive Reputation: Individuals and countries with a reputation for integrity are respected.

– Encourages Ethical Behavior: Integrity is contagious. When leaders display integrity, followers are more likely to do the same.

Examples of Integrity

  1. In School: A student who finds a lost wallet and returns it with all the money and cards intact.
  2. In Government: A politician who refuses to accept bribes and makes decisions that benefit the public, not just themselves.

  4. In Relationships: A friend who keeps a secret, even when others press them for the information.

How to Practice Integrity

– Cultural Values: Many Nigerian cultures have proverbs and stories that emphasize honesty and integrity.

– Historical Figures: Leaders like Nnamdi Azikiwe and Tafawa Balewa are remembered for their integrity in politics.

Integrity is a cornerstone of a prosperous and fair society. By practicing integrity, we can build a better Nigeria and a better world.
