HELLO, WELCOME TO A NEW CLASS
In previous classes we practiced reading and writing numbers to 100 and then to 1000 then to 1000000. That is one hundred, one thousand and then one million.
100(one hundred) is 10 in 10 places. 1000(one thousand) is 100 in 10 places while 1000000(one million) is 1000 in 1000 places.
In this lesson we will be reading, writing in words and figure numbers up to one billion. 1000000 in 1000 places. That is one million in one thousand places.
So, 1 billion is written in figures as 1000000000. It can be seen that 1 million has 6 zeros while 1 billion has 9 zeros.
To write numbers in billions more easily, we put a comma after every three zero starting to count from the last zero. So, one billion is written 1,000,000,000. The last 3 zeros are in the place value of hundred, tens and unit, the next 3 zeros are in the place value of thousand, followed by million and then billion. We should note that numbers up to 1 billion are made up of 10 digits and above. Let’s try to write some numbers in words.
Example: write 18613049 in words.
The first step is to put commas after every 3 digit counting from the back.
18,613,049. So in words the figure is written
Eighteen million, six hundred and thirteen thousand, and forty nine.
Example 2: write in words 12745332486
We put the commas and write out the words
12,745,332,486
Twelve billion, seven hundred and forty five million, three hundred and thirty two thousand, four hundred and eighty six.
Example 3: Write in numerals:
Four hundred eight million, twenty-nine thousand, three hundred fifty-six.
Pick out the classes: “million”, “thousand”. Each class (except perhaps the first class on the left) has exactly three digits:
Example 4: Write in numerals: Five billion, sixteen thousand and nine.
Again, we must write sixteen thousand” as 016; and “nine” as 009; because each class must have three digits. The exception is the class on the extreme left. We may write “Five” as 5 rather than 005.
