Meaning of authority

Authority can be defined as the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience

Meaning of constituted authority

Constituted authority refers to an individual, group or body vested with legitimate power and the right to govern or control societal institutions, people and resources for the smooth running and development of the society as well as for the common good of a group or society. The aim of constituted authorities is to enhance the smooth running of the society by ensuring the rights of each member are respected.

Types of constituted authorities

There are FOUR types of constituted authorities:

  1. Government Constituted Authority
  2. Religious Constituted Authority
  3. Traditional Constituted Authority
  4. Organisational Constituted Authority
  • Government constituted authority:

Government constituted Authorities: These are representatives or officers who have been properly appointed or elected under the constitution for the government of a country’s citizenry. E.g. the Presidents, the Governors, the ministers, etc.

Functions of government constituted authority
  1. They protect the citizens against internal and external attacks
  2. They make Law and Execute them
  3. They promote national unity
  4. They respect the dignity of an individual
  5. They protect the rights of individuals in the country
  6. They provide social amenities like water, electricity, etc. for the people.
  • Traditionally constituted authorities:

Traditionally constituted authority is based on the customs and traditions or culture of the people. The leaders are in charge of the local traditions and customs. They are traditional rulers. Examples include Emir of Kano, Oba of Benin, Alaafin of Oyo, etc.

Functions of traditionally constituted authority
  1. They help the local government to maintain law and order in local communities.
  2. They take charge of local traditions.
  3. They are the chief priests or heads of traditional ceremonies.
  4. They help the government to educate people on the need for cooperation with the government.
  • Religious constituted authorities:

These are religious leaders. They are spiritual leaders of any religious group in society. They can be elected or appointed depending on their practice or doctrine. Examples are Imams, Pastors, Ifa Priests, etc.

Functions of religious constituted authority
  1. They attend to the spiritual needs of their members
  2. They act as intermediaries between God and their followers.
  3. They help in educating their members on various Government policies.
  4. They help to maintain peace and orderliness in their different groups.
  • Organisational constituted authorities:

These are leaders of business organizations, clubs, political parties or social gatherings.

Functions of organizational constituted authority.
  1. They cater to the interest of their members
  2. They make decision and policies for their members
  3. They protect the right of their members
  4. They represent their organizations in any relevant event in society.
Importance of constituted authority
  1. Constituted authorities maintain laws and order to bring about development in the society.
  2. Constituted authorities work to ensure that the rights of citizens or members of the society are protected.
  3. Constituted authorities work to protect lives and properties of citizens or members of the society:
  4. Religious constituted authorities direct the affairs of their societies and help members to be closer to God.
  5. Constituted authorities ensure the people live in peace and harmony with one another.
  6. They ensure orderliness in the state and help to settle a dispute in the society.
