Sodeke of Abeokuta
Imagine you and your family are in danger, and you need to find a new home to be safe. Who would lead you? How would you survive? This was the situation of the Egba people in the 19th century. They were facing wars and needed a strong leader to guide them to a safe place. That leader was Sodeke, the first leader of Abeokuta.
Who Was Sodeke?
Sodeke was a great warrior and leader of the Egba people. He was born in the early 19th century and became a strong and respected leader among his people. The Egba people were originally living in Egba Forest, but they were constantly attacked by enemies, especially the Oyo Empire and the Dahomey Kingdom. They needed a new home where they could be safe.
How Sodeke Led the Egba People to Abeokuta
In the 1820s, the Fulani warriors destroyed Oyo, and many Yoruba people, including the Egba, had to flee. Sodeke took charge and led his people on a long journey to find a new home. He took them to a place near the Ogun River, which was full of rocks and caves. This place was called Abeokuta, meaning “under the rock.”
Why Did They Choose Abeokuta?
Sodeke and the Egba people chose Abeokuta because:
The rocks provided protection from enemies.
The Ogun River gave them water for drinking and farming.
The land was good for farming and hunting.
They were welcomed by the Awori people, who already lived there.
Sodeke’s Leadership in Abeokuta
As the first leader of Abeokuta, Sodeke:
Organised the Egba people to build homes and farms.
Encouraged trade with the British and other traders.
Protected Abeokuta from attacks, especially from the powerful Dahomey army.
Worked with Christian missionaries, who later helped to develop the town.
One of Sodeke’s greatest achievements was leading the Egba warriors to defeat King Ghezo of Dahomey in 1845, when he tried to attack Abeokuta. His leadership made Abeokuta a strong and independent city.
