This is the artistic acquaintance to nature through the study, drawing or painting of natural object. Eg birds, beetles, flowers, fruits etc. the study of natural objects through observatory exercises will help the art students to be accustomed to shape, size and details that are visually predominant in the object of study.  It will further expose the students to simple basic technique :

  1. Measuring by sight.
  2. Identifying objects by the natural colour and shade particular to the objects.
  3. Describing objects by their features.

From the study of nature through observatory drawing, the art student will be exposed to the aesthetics and beauty of natural objects as found in plants and animals, living microorganisms, wilderness, water bodies (the stream, rivers, lakes, oceans and ponds), weather or atmosphere.

Nature has always been a traditional source of inspiration for the artist especially long before the advent of the cameras and photographs.  The artistic study of nature was the only way of documenting natural objects, animals, persons, sites and scenes along with the elements of parts that consist of their makeups.

In other words, nature drawing as a study process relies on the careful and detailed inspection and assimilation of the intriguing features of the element of nature that is brought before the artist or student: his ability to draw or paint on paper, cardboard or canvas, a true or abstract representation of the subject matter as a whole or in parts isolating to the others.

Nature drawing explores the observation and study of the fundamental quality of plants and animals.  Eg. Character, complexion, features, makeup and attributes.  It is the study and artistic documentation of natural un-spoilt scenery like landscape, seascape, natural history and other forms of scenery.  Natural disposition, temperaments, desires and moods fall under the study of nature drawing.
