Hello guys, welcome to class
What are farm crops?
A crop is a plant product that can be grown and harvested extensively for profit or subsistence. Crop may refer either to the harvested parts or to the harvest in a more refined state. Most crops are cultivated in agriculture. Most crops are harvested as food for humans. In the previous term we treated classification of crop plants. When classified based on their uses, we have groups like cereal, legumes, spices, vegetables etc.below are other examples.
Examples of crops
(i). Cereals e.g. maize, sorghum
(ii). Legumes – cowpea, soyabeans
(iii). Tuber yam, sweet potatoes
All the mentioned crops can be grown for food and also for profit for the farmer.
The cereal crops commonly grown in Nigeria are maize, rice, sorghum, millet and guinea corn. These crops feed and grow mainly on the top soil because of their fibrous shallow root system.
