Animal feed is food given to domestic animals in the course of animal husbandry. There are two basic types: fodder and forage. Animal feed is the food given to animals which are domestic often refers to fodder in the course of care and management of farm animals by humans for profit. Supply of quality feed ensures the health of animals.
Animal feeds can either be locally prepared or processed in factories. Below are some locally acquired animal feed
Rice bran, Rice straw, Maize offal, Maize stover, Cowpea vines, Soybean haulm. Beniseed haulm, Groundnut haulm, Cottonseed cake, Cassava peels, Yam peels, Sweet potato peels, Sweet potato vines
Local feeds for poultry livestock include Maize, Groundnut cake, Palm kernel cake, Blood meal, Fishmeal, Wheat offal, Bone meal,
Livestock feed can also be processed. Feed processing is simply the processing/formulating of raw agricultural ingredients like wheat, forage, and the likes into consumable cattle feed, dog feed, and bird feed.
Livestock feed processing involves the following steps or activities:
Cleaning of raw material
Raw material weighing
Grinding
Batching and mixing
Palletizing
Cooling
Screening
Packaging
Storing
Dispatching.
EVALUATION
- Mention five food items that can serve as feed for farm animals,
- List four processes or activities involved in the processing of farm animal feeds.
ASSIGNMENT
- Gather five to seven of the local foods, wrap little quantities in transparent nulon and glue them on a cardboard to form an album
