Still Life Drawing
This is the drawing of non-living inanimate or man-made objects. Practical still life drawing exposes and teaches students the following;
- Basic techniques of drawing, composition and painting.
- Proficiency in handling different art media.
- Builds the student on the step by step approach to rendering and interpreting tone, mass, depths and colour.
- Regular practice to develop and strengthen the student’s natural drawing and observatory abilities.
- The drawing, composition and painting skills learnt from still life drawing can be applied to any other subject in art.
Reasons for still life drawing or painting
- To express the artist acquired drawing or painting style or skill.
- To capture the unfading beauty of objects as depicted through the eyes of the artist.
- To reflect the status of the target audience.
- For their symbolic meaning guided a theme.
- To explore it as a controlled medium to express the abstract quality of the visual element in objects.
Simple guides and techniques that can help the student when embarking on a still life drawing
- Still life drawing is an observational drawing, so always look at what you are drawing to get details and shapes, proportion, source of light and colour.
- Apply your understanding of perspective.
- Use grid marks, guidelines or a light rough sketch to get the proportion straight before adding details.
- Keep the outlines light as a real object, do not have dark lines running around every edge, rather they are defined by a change in tone or colour. This means the darker the lines, the change in meaning connotation.
- Observe and interpret a good range of tone.
- Include or omit details as you deem necessary.
- Mark making techniques can be used to depict texture where necessary.
In our next class, we will be talking about Nature Drawing. We hope you enjoyed the class.
