Production of Tuber Crops(Cassava)

Welcome back to class

Last lesson we learnt about the steps taken in the production of maize which is a cereal. In today’s lesson, we will look at the production of cassava. Cassava is a tuber. Other examples of tuber crops are sweet potatoes, Yam, Cocoyam, Irish potato and Carrot.

How to Grow CassavaStep 1: Cut fresh cassava stems into pieces of about 15 cm long. Each piece must have viable bud eyes.Step 2: Measure the planting distances of about 90 cm apart on the ridge or flat.Step 3: Push the cut stem into the ridge or flat at the 90 cm distances in a slanting position making sure that the buds are facing upwards. Continue in this manner until the plot is planted up.Step 4: Check for sprouting two or three weeks after planting and replace the dead sticks.Step 5: Apply NPK fertilizer about five weeks after sprouting.Step 6: Carry out the first weeding and remold the ridges.Step 7: Do the second weeding after about 6 months.Step 8: Check for maturity 12-18 months after planting, depending on the variety planted.Step 9: Harvest the tubers and process within 3 days of harvesting.
