Cultism
Cultists are a group of people with extreme religious, cultural or social beliefs. Cultism is the practice of cult. Cultism can, therefore, be defined as an organization whose activities are usually kept from the knowledge of others and carried out secretly and usually clash with the accepted norms and values of everyday life. Examples of the cult group are school/campus fraternity, traditional cult groups, etc.
Causes of cultism
- To have a sense of superiority over others.
- To revenge what someone has done to them.
- A rough upbringing of a child can make him/her join a cult group.
- To get protection against intimidation.
- Due to peer pressure and keeping of bad friends, they lure them into cultism.
- To gain popularity and recognition
Consequences of cultism
- Death of innocent people especially during their violent clashes.
- The premature death of the members.
- Rustication and expulsion from school
- Jail or prison term as a form of punishment
- Destruction of school/public property.
- Disruption of societal peace.
- Standard of education falls due to constant closure of the school as a result of cultist clashes.
Solutions to the problem of cultism in Nigeria
- Addressing the physical, psychological and social needs of children at home.
- Children/teenagers straining and upbringing should not be left in the hands of teachers alone.
- Discouraging children from joining these groups by letting them know the dangers involved.
- Early curbing of noticed aggressive behaviour in children.
- Parents should enforce discipline on their children.
- School authorities should have stringent punishments for cultism.
- Public campaigns against cultism through media, religious bodies, parents, NGO’s, etc.
